While featuring Hungarian folk songs, Una cartolina illustrata di Ungheria by Ilona Meskó depicts some radically different but in the meantime rather characteristic moods of the Hungarian. These characters – impetuosity, pride, playfulness, passion, resignation, bitterness and contemplation- change rhapsodically, or sometimes linger throughout a whole musical passage. Concerning folk music, what tells about being Hungarian is tempo giusto, typical accents and simple rhythms played rubato but notated precisely, thus bringing in the freedom of the original performer. This precomposed freedom allows every performer to approximate the authentic folk style.
